7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route (Whiskey Route)

Embark on the adventure of a lifetime with our 7-day Mount Kilimanjaro climb via the Machame Route, one of the most scenic and successful paths to the Roof of Africa. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame offers a perfect balance of challenge, breathtaking landscapes, and excellent acclimatization, making it a favorite among adventurous trekkers from around the world.

This carefully designed 7-day itinerary allows you to experience Kilimanjaro’s dramatic ecological zones—from lush rainforest and heathland to alpine desert and icy summit glaciers—while maximizing your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m). With extra time for acclimatization, expert mountain guides, and full support from a dedicated crew, this climb combines safety, comfort, and unforgettable achievement.

Whether you are a first-time high-altitude trekker or an experienced hiker seeking a world-class challenge, the Machame Route promises stunning views, rewarding climbs, and the ultimate sense of accomplishment as you stand atop Africa’s highest mountain.

Day 1: Moshi → Machame Gate → Machame Camp

Your adventure begins early in the morning with a full briefing, followed by breakfast in Moshi. Afterward, you will be driven for approximately 45 minutes from Moshi (910m) to Machame Park Gate, where registration and park formalities are completed. Once cleared, the climb officially begins as you enter the lush montane rainforest of Mount Kilimanjaro.

At the gate, you will receive a packed lunch, and bottled water purchased in Moshi will be used throughout the day. The rainforest trail is often wet and muddy, especially during rainy conditions, making sections of the hike slippery but rewarding, with dense vegetation, towering trees, and rich wildlife along the way.

In the late afternoon, you will arrive at Machame Camp, where the support team will have already prepared the campsite. Porters will boil water for drinking and washing, and the cook will serve a freshly prepared hot dinner. As night falls, temperatures can drop to freezing point. You will spend the night in tents, allowing your body to rest and begin acclimatization.

Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp

You will rise early at Machame Camp and begin the day with breakfast before setting off on the trail. The hike starts with a steady climb of about an hour to the edge of the rainforest, after which the vegetation gradually opens into the moorland zone. For the next two hours, you will continue at a gentler gradient, enjoying expansive views and a noticeable change in landscape.

After a short rest and lunch break, the ascent continues along a rocky ridge leading onto the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on Mount Kilimanjaro. From this vantage point, you will have clear views to the east of the Western Breach, with its dramatic ice formations and glaciers. At this point, you are positioned due west of Kibo Peak.

Following a short final hike, you will arrive at Shira Camp (3,840m). Upon arrival, the porters will prepare boiled water for drinking and washing, and a warm dinner will be served. This campsite is more exposed than the previous night, and temperatures can drop well below freezing. You will spend the night camping as your body continues to acclimatize to the increasing altitude.

Day 3: Shira Camp → Barranco Camp

Today the route turns east as you leave Shira Camp and enter a stark, semi-desert landscape of volcanic rock and scree surrounding Lava Tower. The trail gradually ascends, and after approximately five hours of hiking, you will reach an altitude of about 4,630m. Lunch is served at a designated area near Lava Tower before the final short ascent to this high point.

This is typically the most demanding day so far and marks the first time many climbers begin to feel the effects of altitude, such as shortness of breath, mild headaches, or fatigue. Reaching this high elevation plays a crucial role in the acclimatization process.

After lunch, you will descend nearly 680 meters to Barranco Camp, a drop that clearly demonstrates the “climb high, sleep low” principle and greatly aids acclimatization. The descent takes about two hours and offers excellent photo opportunities, with stunning views of the Western Breach and the Breach Wall.

Barranco Camp is set in a scenic valley below the imposing Great Barranco Wall, providing a dramatic and unforgettable setting. As evening approaches, you can enjoy a spectacular sunset while the crew prepares dinner. You will spend the night camping at Barranco Camp, resting and recovering for the next stage of the climb.

Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Today’s hike covers a distance of approximately 6 km, ascending from Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m). The day begins with an early start and an exciting scramble up the famous Barranco Wall, an almost vertical rock face that rises to about 4,200m. Although steep, the climb is non-technical and is one of the most enjoyable and memorable sections of the Machame Route.

After reaching the top of the wall, the trail levels out and continues across the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The route offers impressive views of glaciers, valleys, and the surrounding alpine landscape as you traverse toward the Karanga Valley.

After approximately three hours of hiking, you will arrive at Karanga Camp, a key acclimatization stop before the summit attempt. Upon arrival, the crew will prepare the campsite, provide boiled water for drinking and washing, and serve a hot meal. You will spend the night at Karanga Camp, resting and continuing the acclimatization process.

Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Today’s trek is a relatively short but important ascent, covering approximately 5 km from Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m). After breakfast, you set off in a southeasterly direction, hiking through a barren alpine desert landscape with expansive views of Kibo Peak.

At the trail junction, the route turns north and continues steadily upward to Barafu Camp, which you will reach after about four hours of hiking. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky and exposed as you gain altitude.

Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you will have time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy an early meal. The remainder of the day is dedicated to recovery and mental preparation for the most challenging part of the climb—the midnight summit ascent. As night falls, you will rest in your tent before being awakened later for the final push to the summit.

Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Shortly before midnight, you will wake for tea and a light snack before beginning the most demanding and rewarding day of the climb. Starting from Barafu Camp, you head in a northwesterly direction, ascending the southeast valley toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This section of the climb is slow and steady, requiring strong mental focus and physical endurance.

The ascent to Stella Point takes approximately six hours and is widely regarded as the toughest part of the entire trek. The steep scree slope just below the crater rim presents the ultimate challenge, but reaching Stella Point is a major milestone and a moment of great achievement.

From Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Time spent at the summit depends on weather and wind conditions, allowing for photos and a brief celebration before beginning the descent.

You will then descend all the way to Mweka Camp, a long but gradual trek that can take seven hours or more. As you lose altitude, oxygen levels increase and the environment becomes more comfortable. Upon arrival at Mweka Camp, the crew will prepare dinner, and you will spend the night resting after an unforgettable summit day.

Day 7: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

After breakfast, you begin the final descent from Mweka Camp through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. This section of the trail is often muddy and slippery, and the walk usually takes about one hour. Upon arrival at the gate, you will sign out of the national park and officially complete your Mount Kilimanjaro climb.

At Mweka Gate, successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Climbers who reached Stella Point (5,685m) are awarded green certificates, while those who reached Uhuru Peak (5,895m) receive gold certificates. This is also the point where you say goodbye to your mountain crew, and tipping is customary and highly appreciated in recognition of their hard work and support throughout the climb.

You will then be transferred back to Moshi, where an additional overnight stay can be arranged upon request. Depending on your schedule, you will later be dropped off at the airport, marking the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
